This is probably deemed too controversial to be put in a local paper.
The Price of Getting Around Singapore
Not too long back, someone wrote in, fighting for the fairness of SBS & SMRT transport rates for polytechnic students. I remember something along the lines of why train/ bus fares for Junior College students should be the same as poly students.
Indeed, many people choose a different route to a University life.
Does it mean the young who have decided on a specific course of life and choose to go to a polytechnic or private educational institutes to pursue their interest are considered adults and have to pay the adult fare?
SBS/ SMRT could say there is the concessionary pass for the poly students to ease the cost 'burden' but what about the equally young ones studying at private institutes? It is bad enough that some of them, like me, have to work hard to support ourselves and pay our own school fees. The lack of support in little ways like transport rates certainly do not help matters.
Travelling makes up a big part of our daily life.
We have to take the bus/ train/ cab (or drive) to work, school, shops...
What with motor vehicles being so expensive in Singapore, the rise of fuel costs, increase in public transport fares, does it mean we have to resort to cycling?
Even then, there are problems, no lanes for cyclists for one.
What do we do then? Walk?
