Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa (translated; Language is the soul of a Nation) is a famous Malay adage which entered into common usage among the Malay community in the 1950s. In the wake of anti-colonial, nationalist sentiments, Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa became the rallying cry for Bahasa Melayu (Malay language) to be enshrined as the National language of then-Malaya. Bahasa has its origins in the Sanskrit word, bhasa, to mean both 'language' and 'manners'. Thus, in the Malay sensibility, how one writes and speaks will reflect to others his thought, culture and heritage.
